A Physician, Researcher & Innovator

Dr. Shahar Shelly is a leading Israeli neurologist specializing in neuromuscular diseases and neuroimmunology. After completing his medical degree with distinction at the University of Debrecen, he trained in neurology at Sheba Medical Center and pursued a prestigious fellowship at Mayo Clinic (2018–2021), where he co-discovered the antibody responsible for neurochondrin-associated ataxia — now used in routine malignancy screening worldwide.

In 2024 he was appointed Chair of the Neurology Department at Rambam — the largest neuromuscular unit in northern Israel — while continuing his role as Head of Neuroimmunology at the Technion and directing the AI Neurology Laboratory, which integrates machine learning with clinical neuroscience.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the connection between nerves and muscles. This causes muscles to tire quickly — leading to drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and in some cases serious breathing problems.

Dr. Shelly is one of Israel's leading MG specialists. He led the writing of Israel's first national clinical guidelines for MG, has published over 13 peer-reviewed papers on the disease, co-authored an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, and treats complex MG patients at both Rambam and his private clinic.
